HKINLUM EDUCATION UPLIFT PROGRAM

Education is the foundation for growth of a nation and the shield to protect a nation. Because of the educational system in Burma, many youths lost confedence, felt unsafe and their lives were overwhelmed by worry in all aspect. Thus there is lack of active, courgaeous and effective leadership for the people. Besides, there are many intellectual persons who can not accompish their education due ti the difficulty in educational system of Burma. Therefore, aiming to support the promotion of the education of the Kachin People and uplift the leadership skills, we founded the HKINLUM EDUCATION UPLIFT PROGRAM.

I. Name: Hkinlum Education Uplift Program

Defination: In the oral history of the Kachin, there was a universal flood. After the flood, Kinseng Shabrang and Hpungdin Kainang from heaven were send down to renew the creation on earth. They brought the heavenly blessing together with them. Among these blessing was Hkinlum Htu Sha, the angel of education and wisdom. We took the name Hkinlum to symbolise the purpose of education, that is to promote and guide the people. We named this program so that we may be able to help promote the education and knowledge of the people.

II. Background History

This program was not initiated by the support or encoragement of some one nor some organization. In 2003, some Kachin students reached to the agreement that, without content, disappointment, blame and criticism on what our leaders today have done, we will strive whatever we can to help support the educational uplift of the people. Thence these students from Myitkyina University and Kachin Theological College, those who are interested in education and who are willing to serve the community raised such a small amount of money 7,000/- kyats and started this program.

III. Purpose

1. To help the students who are willing, but have difflculty with the metric exam, to make out the metriculation.

2. To raise the spirit of service for the university students and graduate students so that they may became willing to share thier knowledge and ability in teaching other.

3. In order that the people be educated and knowledgable.

IV. Concept

1. Self reliance;

2. To initiate free thinking and practical process.

The education determines our live, our fate, our vision and our dreams.

VI. Work plan

1. Teaching centers will be established in every region.

2. Conduct workshops, tutoring, consutaion session for the students in cooperation with resource persons.

3. Organize Friends of Hkinlum.

4. Train some reliable youths for higher education.

VII. Work accomplished

We established grade 11 free tution centers are 7 centers and During 2003 and 2008, total 293 students have metriculated from Hkinlum Education Uplift Program.

VIII. Future plan

Program will be extende to sixth grade students. We have plan to erect a student boarding house. Because of the insufficient educational system of Burma, many youths, even though graduted, have lak of vocational skills. Therefore, hoping that we may be able to train educated and intellectual leaders in the future, we will accept the students since sixth grade. While we are educating them the government's formal education, on the other hand, we will teach them extra training specializing English, computer, Kachin literature and history.

1. You can support individual student's expense. (Eg. candles, notebooks, ballpens etc.)

2. In time of need and on request, you may offer supplies for the program.

3. We are hoping every kinds of support, advice or prayer.
